It is not uncommon for wounds that are not completely closed, or unstable scars with chronic fistula and poor blood supply to the skin, to develop after injuries in patients with diabetes, after major operations or after previous radiation therapy as a result of a tumour disease. Plastic surgery techniques such as split thickness skin grafts (STSG), full thickness skin grafts (FTSG) or local flap advancement and free flap procedures (microsurgical tissue transplantation) can help to reconstruct the affected areas.

Following the removal of instable or unsightly scars, and in areas that refuse to fully heal, plastic surgical coverage procedures are used to aid wound stabilisation while improving the patient’s quality of life.
